Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as an elementary school student. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
